The Beethoven Journal

(formerly The Beethoven Newsletter)

Subscriptions and back issues / Submissions and editorial policies / List of contents

The Beethoven Newsletter began publication in Spring 1986. Beginning with Vol. 10 (Spring 1995), the title was changed to The Beethoven Journal. The Journal appears two times a year (formerly Spring and Fall; now Summer and Winter). At present the Journal is not available online. The next issue (vol. 16, no. 1 (Summer 2001)) is scheduled to appear in September 2001.

The Journal is an English-language periodical devoted to Beethoven and includes substantial essays, reviews of books and recordings, bibliographies of the latest books and dissertations, reports on the auction market, and much more.

The intended audience for this publication are the people who love Beethoven's music, who like to read about how his music has been understood and misunderstood in history, who are interested in keeping up with important Beethoven festivals and conferences, and who remain devoted to understanding his music in an ever richer manner.

Subscription and Back Issue Order Information

Subscriptions to the Journal are available through membership in the American Beethoven Society. Memberships start at $45 per year ($20 for students).

Subscriptions for institutions (libraries and other organizations) are $25 per year for subscribers within the U.S. and $35 for subscribers outside the U.S.

The Newsletter's ISSN is 0898-6185

The current issue is Winter 2004 (v. 19, no. 2). The Summer 2005 issue (v. 20, no. 1) will appear in September 2005.

Guidelines for submissions and editorial policies

The Editor welcomes the submission of articles for consideration for publication, as well as other information about Beethoven. Articles are read by at least three reviewers who are normally Beethoven specialists. Potential contributors should consult the Journal for matters of style and citations. Bibliographic citations should include publisher, date, and place of publication. For more information on style and format of submissions, contact the editor, William Meredith.

Letters to the Editor are also welcomed. They may be edited before publication for length.

We request that all material (text and music examples) be submitted both as a paper copy and electronically (preferably formatted as a Microsoft Word document). These paper submissions should be mailed to:

William Meredith, Editor, Beethoven Journal, Beethoven Center, San Jose State University, One Washington Square, San Jose CA 95192-0171

Email submissions should be sent to: meredith@email.sjsu.edu. Submission of the digital copy on CD-ROM rather than email attachment is also acceptable.

Publication of an article in the Journal does not signify that the Center for Beethoven Studies either sanctifies, approves, or disapproves of its conclusions or theories. Rather, we publish articles which contain ideas which we feel deserve to be brought to the wider attention of Beethoven lovers. This has especially been the case when minority or controversial opinions have not been previously published in English.

Finally, we have a policy of correcting all significant errors of fact, although we much prefer to weed them out prior to publication. Our mistakes are listed in the Errata section at the end of the Journal.
