PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHY

Jason Laker is a Professor of Higher Education, Student Affairs, and Community Development and Chair of SJSU's Department of Counselor Education; and a core faculty member with the Ed.D. program in Educational Leadership in the Lurie College of Education.  Prior to joining the faculty, he served as the Vice President for Student Affairs here at SJSU, leading a Division with over 28 departments, 350 staff, and $68M in combined budgets.

Jason has over 30 years of successful and progressively more complex academic and administrative leadership experiences in student and academic affairs, at six distinct institutional environments (e.g., research, public, private, large, small, religious, liberal arts) in the U.S. and Canada (he is originally from Michigan). He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona's Center for the Study of Higher Education, an M.A. in Community Counseling from Adams State College (CO), and a B.S. in Organizational Communication from Central Michigan University.

Immediately prior to joining SJSU, he served as Associate V.P. and Dean of Student Affairs (e.g. the chief student affairs officer) at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, a selective national public research university with 20,000 students. In this capacity, he led a diverse administrative portfolio of 18 units (including the nationally competitive intercollegiate athletics program), 250 FTE, and a combined $60M in base, ancillary and externally funded budgets.

At Queen's, his institutional responsibilities included serving as an ex-officio voting member of the University Senate and supervising the licensing of Queen's brand mark. He also taught in the Department of Gender Studies, was affiliated with the graduate program in Cultural Studies, and served as a fellow with the Centre for the Study of Democracy in the School of Policy Studies. This was his second deanship.

Jason has developed and/or taught courses in several disciplines, particularly on subjects of community and identity, and has received several awards for his leadership, teaching, research, and service. His international activities include serving as one of only 19 Global Associate Members of the International Association of Universities and the only North American on the editorial board of the Expertise Publications Program of the European Training Foundation (an agency of the European Union).  He has also served as a Visiting Scholar at universities in Spain, Croatia, and Slovenia. Here at SJSU he served as a Salzburg Fellow.  Jason is the International Series Editor for Palgrave Studies in Global Citizenship Education and Democracy, launched with two books co-edited with colleagues in Spain and Croatia, and now including over 24 texts from scholars around the world.

Dr. Laker has presented many keynotes and invited sessions at professional conferences on higher education, student affairs and development issues, gender, community leadership and related topics, and has a significant publication record in these areas including five books and many book chapters and journal articles.  He also sevres as the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Men's Studies.
