Limited Submissions Programs and Strategic Grants

Dear Faculty,
This month we are pleased to share newly released limited submission opportunities from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) listed under Health and Human Services (upcoming deadline January 23, 2023), and the National Science Foundation (NSF) listed under Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (upcoming deadline November 11, 2022), as well as new strategic grant highlights from NIH, the National Endowment for the Humanities, NSF, the Department of Commerce, and NASA.

Up-to-date information is also available anytime on our SJSU InfoReady Portal (for limited submissions) and via our SJSU Strategic Grants list within Pivot — SJSU’s go-to tool for finding funding. Past “top-of-the month” communications and monthly newsletters from the Office of Research associate vice president can be found on the Office of Research website under Communications.

All the best,
Julia Gaudinski
Director of Research Development

Newly Released Limited Submissions & Upcoming Deadlines

Health & Human Sciences
NIH | Genome Research Experiences to Attract Talented Undergraduates into Genomic Fields to Enhance Diversity (R25 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
≤$350K/yr. | Internal SJSU Deadline: January 20, 2023 | Sponsor Deadline: July 1, 2023
The overarching goal of this NHGRI R25 program is to support educational activities that encourage undergraduates from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical workforce, to pursue further training and careers in the scientific, medical, ethical, social and/or legal areas of genomics research. To accomplish the stated overarching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on: 1) research experiences, and 2) courses for skills development.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math

$2.5M | Internal SJSU Deadline: November 11, 2022 | Preliminary Proposal (Sponsor Required): December 16, 2023 | Sponsor’s Deadline: April 3, 2023
This is a crosscutting program with participation from NSF Directorates: BIO, CISE, EHR, ENG, MPS and TIP. This is no longer a "Big Ideas" solicitation because the quantum leap big idea activity is now part of the larger quantum information science and engineering priority area.

The Quantum Sensing Challenges for Transformational Advances in Quantum Systems (QuSeC-TAQS) program supports interdisciplinary teams of three (3) or more investigators to explore highly innovative, original, and potentially transformative research on quantum sensing. The QuSeC-TAQS program supports coordinated efforts to develop and apply quantum sensor systems, with demonstrations resulting in proof of principle or field-testing of concepts and platforms that can benefit society. The QuSeC-TAQS program aligns with recommendations articulated in the strategy report, Bringing Quantum Sensors to Fruition, that was produced by the National Science and Technology Council Subcommittee on Quantum Information Science, under the auspices of the National Quantum Initiative.

New Strategic Grant Highlights

Health and Human Services
NIH | Bioengineering Research Grants (BRG) (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

$500K | Deadlines: October 31, 2022 | February 5, 2023 | June 5, 2023 | October 5, 2023 | February 5, 2024 | June 5,2024 | October 5, 2024 | February 5, 2025 | June 5, 2025.

Purpose of this funding opportunity announcement is to encourage collaborations between life science and physical science. Applications may propose design-directed, developmental, discovery-driven, or hypothesis-driven research, and this FOA is appropriate for small teams applying an integrative approach to increase our understanding of and solve problems in biological, clinical or translational science.

Humanities & the Arts
NEH | Dangers and Opportunities of Technology: Perspectives from the Humanities
$75K-$150K | Deadline: February 2, 2023
NEH invites projects that link their research to compelling social issues where technology plays
a key role. Projects may address a wide range of topics, such as: climate change; racial justice; social media, disinformation, and the democratic process; medical technologies; wealth inequality; data privacy and ethics of algorithms; cryptocurrencies and nonfungible tokens (NFTs); supply chains and infrastructure; educational technologies; or streaming economy (e.g., music, television, film).

Minority Serving Institutions & Underserved Communities
NSF | Computer and Information Science and Engineering Minority-Serving Institutions Research Expansion Program (CISE-MSI Program)
$400K-$1.2M | Deadline: February 10, 2023
Please Note:
Institutions that have received an NSF award in the CISE programs within the last five years listed in Section II are ineligible to serve as lead
institutions, but may participate as collaborators. In each annual competition, an individual may participate in at most two proposals, across all solicitation threads, as PI, co-PI, or Senior Personnel.
The goal of the CISE-MSI program is to broaden participation by increasing the number of CISE-funded research projects from MSIs and to develop research capacity toward successful submissions to core CISE programs: Thread 1: Research Capacity Building Planning Projects (RCBP); Thread 2: Demonstration Projects (DP); Thread 3: Research Partnerships Enhancement Projects (RPEP).

NASA | ROSES Amendment 46: F.14 Transform to Open Science Training (TOPST)
~ $3.5M | Deadline: December 8, 2022 | Grant/Cooperative Agreement
NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD) is making a long-term commitment to support building an inclusive open science community over the next decade via the Open-Source Science Initiative (OSSI). A key component of OSSI is the Transforming to Open Science (TOPS) project. The TOPS project will coordinate efforts designed to accelerate scientific discovery and equity with open science.

NASA | ROSES Amendment 47: (D.7) Strategic Astrophysics Technology
~ $3.5M | Deadline: December 15, 2022 | Grant/Cooperative Agreement
The Strategic Astrophysics Technology program (SAT; program element D.7) supports focused development efforts for key technologies to the point at which they are ready to feed into major missions in the three science themes of the Astrophysics Division: Exoplanet Exploration, Cosmic Origins, and the Physics of the Cosmos.

NASA | ROSES Amendment 50: C.27 Precursor Science Investigations for Europa
$2.5M | Deadline: December 16, 2022.12.16 | Grant/Cooperative Agreement
The goal of the Precursor Science Investigations for Europa (PSI-E) program is to further the understanding of critical topics in Europa exploration in advance of the Europa Clipper mission.

NASA | ROSES Amendment 49: C.26 Apollo Next Generation Sample Analysis Program (ANGSA)
~ $3.5M | Deadline: January 19, 2023 | Grant/Cooperative Agreement
The goal of the Apollo Next Generation Sample Analysis (ANGSA) Program is to maximize the science derived from samples returned by the Apollo Program in preparation for future lunar missions anticipated in the 2020s and beyond. To achieve this, the 2 nd ANGSA call will focus on small, high-value samples that are nearing their pristinity limit.

NSF | Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE): Core Programs
$600K-$1.2M | Deadline: December 12, 2022 (MEDIUM Projects and OAC Core Projects)
(Please Note: Small project full proposals are accepted anytime)
