Greetings from the Office of Research
As the semester begins to close, I want to remind you that the Office of Research continues to be available should you require our assistance. Federal funding continues to adapt its goals to best serve the needs of the public. This is evident in the new mandates for data management and sharing disclosure at NIH and in continued investments in minority serving institutions (MSIs) like San José State University. In the coming months, we will provide the information and tools needed for you to navigate these changing requirements. Additionally, we encourage you to explore funding mechanisms designed for MSIs, such as NSF Build and Broaden, National Endowment for the Humanities Awards for Faculty at Hispanic Serving Institutions, as well as Department of Defense Research and Education Program (REP) for HBCUs and MSIs. Each of these opportunities align with our mission and promise as an MSI, and could potentially benefit your personal RSCA and the university.
We encourage you to stay informed of upcoming RSCA-related events. One of note is our December 2 in-person RSCA in Five Faculty Short Talks. The theme for the session is Community Engaged RSCA. Please find the event details below. If you have questions, please contact the Office of Research at officeofresearch@sjsu.edu.
Sincerely,
Richard Mocarski Associate Vice President for Research

RSCA in Five Faculty Short Talks for AY2022/23!
Join us on December 2 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for our next RSCA in Five: Faculty Short Talk — Community Engaged RSCA! Much of the research, scholarship, and creative activity (RSCA) on campus is designed to bring educational, economic, and social benefits to our local and global communities.
Are you curious about what your fellow Spartans are working on, and how their RSCA benefits our local and global communities? Now is your chance to hear about this exciting research in short, five-minute talks. Our flagship research, scholarship, and creative activity (RSCA) dissemination series, hosted in person, allows us to showcase our faculty and their work, and creates space for potential research connections and future collaborations.
When: Friday, December 2, 2022 | 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Location: SJSU Student Union, Meeting Room 3 A & B
The session will be live-streamed for those who are unable to attend the talks in person; however, to maximize networking opportunities, we strongly encourage in-person attendance. The in-person event concludes with opportunities for general group discussions that include the audience, the presenters, and representatives from the Office of Research. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently announced changes to the names of the Directorate for Education and Human Resources and the Division of Human Resource Development. The change is intended "to more accurately reflect and communicate the values and totality of NSF’s work with STEM education including supporting the
missing millions — Americans from every background, in each state, who have the potential to participate in STEM — the directorate will now be known as the
Directorate for STEM Education, or EDU, and the division will be known as the Division of Equity for Excellence in STEM, or EES."

Important Reminder for NIH Awardees
On September 16, 2022, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) released
NOT-OD-22-210, which included important reminders about the disclosure of significant financial interests, especially financial interests from sources outside of the United States.
It is important to remember that Public Health Service regulations require investigators to disclose "income from seminars, lectures, or teaching engagements, income from service on advisory committees or review panels, and reimbursed or sponsored travel" received from "any foreign entity, including foreign institutions of higher education, or foreign governments, including local, provincial, or equivalent governments of another country," when such income is in excess of the $5,000 threshold. This information is noteworthy, because income from these same activities received from a U.S. institution is specifically excluded from the NIH definition of Significant Financial Interest.
If you have any questions about which financial interests should be disclosed while applying for federal funding, check out our Conflict of Interest FAQs on our
Conflicts of Interest web page or contact Research Compliance directly at
researchcompliance@sjsu.edu.

New Supplier Request Form — Required for Supplier Transactions
Suppliers must be set up in the SJSU Research Foundation (SJSURF) system before purchases can be made from the supplier. The new Supplier Request Form, recently introduced by the SJSU Research Foundation Accounts Payable department, will ensure that the required information is available to accurately assess and set up suppliers after they are approved.
If you are contacting a new supplier directly, please be sure the supplier submits the completed form along with their W-9. If the Accounts Payable (AP) staff contacts the supplier on your behalf, the AP staff member will ensure that the form is completed as required. Complete instructions are included with the form.
The new Supplier Request Form is available on the SJSURF Forms web page listed under Accounts Payable. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact SJSURF Accounts Payable at research-foundation-ap@sjsu.edu.
