Title: Cluster analysis: discover homogeneous groups of units in a data set.

Abstract:

Cluster analysis aims to identify homogeneous groups of units within a dataset, facilitating insights into underlying structures and patterns. The primary objective is to partition a set of objects into clusters where the objects within each cluster are more similar to one another compared to those in other clusters. This approach falls under the umbrella of unsupervised learning, as the groupings are not predefined.

The definition of homogeneity and the specific application domain dictate the choice of clustering technique. Model-based clustering stands out for its properties and the interpretability of its results. In this presentation, I will introduce model-based clustering and demonstrate its application using real-world examples.

Furthermore, I will address contemporary challenges encountered in cluster analysis, such as dealing with non-normally distributed clusters, coping with outliers, handling missing data, and accommodating data of mixed type.

Finally, I will provide insights into available software tools that facilitate the application of the discussed techniques, empowering practitioners to take advantage of the full potential of model-based clustering in diverse domains.
