Meteorology

This M.S. program prepares students for high-level professional responsibility, independent research, and continued graduate work in atmospheric science. The Department of Meteorology and Climate Science has one of the most active research programs at SJSU. Faculty specialize in Weather Analysis and Forecasting, Fire Weather, Urban Meteorology and Air Pollution, and other areas.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

This M.A. program prepares students to assess and systematically build the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of students from other language backgrounds who wish to learn English or to improve their skills in English. Graduates may work in international settings, teach in school-based English as a Second Language programs, or teach abroad through U.S. government-sponsored Fulbright and English Teaching Fellow programs. 

Mass Communications

This M.S. program in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications was designed to help students master the concepts and skills that are driving emerging communication technologies in public relations, advertising, and journalism. Elective units allow students to tailor the program to their interests.

Linguistics

This M.A. program provides students with an interdisciplinary education in the scientific study of language, including the role of language in society and education as well as language variation and change. Courses in general linguistics develop students’ ability to analyze data, to propose and refine theories about how language works. Elective courses range from computational linguistics to sociolinguistics, multilingualism, and applied linguistics. 

Library and Information Science

SJSU’s School of Information prepares individuals for careers as information professionals who work in diverse areas of the information profession, such as user experience design, digital asset management, information architecture, electronic records management, information governance, digital preservation, and librarianship. The iSchool, a recognized leader in online education, delivers all degrees and certificates fully online.

Transportation Management

The MSTM is a program whose curriculum is led by nationally-recognized instructors who are academic or industry experts. The program is fully accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Students may choose among three graduate certificate options, including High-Speed and Intercity Rail Management, Transportation Security Management, or Transportation Management.

Chicana and Chicano Studies

This interdisciplinary M.A. program is the oldest Chicana/o studies graduate program in the country. Rooted in social justice principles, the program prepares students to critically examine and address intellectual traditions and contemporary issues resulting from intersections in race, ethnicity, class, and gender in Chicanx-Latinx communities. Concentrations include education, policy, and comparative ethnic studies.

Biotechnology

The MBT program integrates advanced, hands-on training in laboratory-based molecular biology courses with MBA-level business courses from the College of Business. The core courses provide an introduction to aspects of the biotechnology industry including drug development, marketing, finance, and intellectual property.

Biomedical Engineering

This M.S. program allows students to be actively engaged in a discipline that has human health and welfare as its primary focus. Biomedical engineering is an inherently interdisciplinary field in which professionals from engineering and the physical sciences play a major role in developing engineered products for deployment in the human body.

Emancipatory School Leadership

The M.A. Educational Leadership (concentration in Emancipatory Leadership for Schools) prepares school leaders through deep engagement with research and practice on living case studies. Students learn to create collaborative organizational cultures that reflect the diversity of experience and knowledge within school communities, to deconstruct power systems, challenge inequitable practices and policies, and cultivate community cultural wealth.

Human Factors/Ergonomics

This M.S. degree is a cooperative program involving the Departments of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Psychology, Industrial Design, and Kinesiology. Human factors/ergonomics is the discipline concerned with the development and application of human-system interface technology to systems analysis, design, and evaluation.

Marine Science

This M.S. program, administered by the hands-on, field-oriented Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, places students at the frontiers of marine science worldwide. MLML provides students with a cutting-edge education that prepares them for careers in science, education and outreach, conservation, policy and management, and for doctoral studies.

Public Health

The MPH program is well-known for its practice-oriented, community-based training and is centered around the goals of public health and social justice through planned, organized, and empowering community efforts. The MPH program, founded in 1970 to prepare community health education practitioners, has been continuously accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health since 1974.

Statistics

This M.S. program prepares students to become practicing statisticians in business, government and industry fields. It features theoretical and applied coursework in statistics and advanced statistical techniques, and its skills-based coursework emphasizes writing and communication skills and provides students with practical project experience.

Public Administration

The MPA program educates and trains individuals to become the leaders, managers and analysts in public and non-profit agencies that serve the Silicon Valley and its diverse population, using tools that enable them to recognize and value diversity, behave with high ethical standards, manage personnel resources fairly, recognize and manage risk, and manage programs and policies efficiently and cost-effectively.
