Student Testimonials

When I was a freshman, CAPISE was not established, and I felt very isolated and alone in my experience. CAPISE gave me a place to explore not only my cultural identity, but how my other identities inform and influence my experiences and time here at San Jose State. I feel more connected to myself, my peers, and my community.

Student Affairs does a great job of empowering students to be innovators and create your own path to success. And I think that the Student Affairs' Student Involvement department is the #1 resource for students on campus.

One of the best decisions I made while being a student at SJSU is making the decision to be a Peer Educator for 3 years. I took on different roles to support and guide my fellow students. As an S.I. Leader for the first 2 years, I facilitated group tutoring sessions in Biology and Chemistry. These interactive sessions allowed my peers to grasp high-yield topics and enhance their academic success, which was very rewarding for me to witness. Thank you to Student Affairs and the Peer Connections team!

San José is making waves in AI innovation!

This week, SJSU joined Mayor Matt Mahan, PG&E CEO Patti Poppe, the Knight Foundation, and others for the launch of the AI Center of Excellence at Plug and Play Tech Center. This milestone solidifies San José as a global AI hub and puts SJSU at the heart of the AI-driven economy.

With this new center, SJSU continues to lead the way, creating pathways for Spartan-eurs to thrive just steps away from the action.

The Spartan Spark Academy, in partnership with Plug and Play, is also helping local high school students build the skills needed to succeed in this fast-evolving industry. Together, we’re powering the future of innovation and opportunity.

Ever wondered how birds’ foraging habits can help science?

Look no further than a recent story in Audubon magazine, which featured SJSU’s very own Scott Shaffer and his work with western gulls near the Farallon Islands, which can help “detect whales traveling in the Pacific Ocean to help prevent vessel strikes, a leading cause of death for the massive marine mammals on the West Coast.”

“Being a woman and growing up in sports has taught me confidence and strength,” explains Spartan gymnast Sophie Konieczny, ’25 Forensic Science. “All girls should have the opportunity to gain those characteristics.”

She’s joined many other female Spartans in volunteering for the Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative (BAWSI), a mentorship program that connects female athletes with local girls to teach them leadership and athletic skills.

It’s all part of SJSU Athletics and Beyond Sparta’s larger commitment to community service: together, Spartan student-athletes completed 20,000 hours of community service during the 2023-4 school year, earning themselves the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Community Service Award.

“By living and going to school in a large metropolitan area, we are constantly exposed to the less fortunate, so it’s very rewarding when the whole athletic department can come together and collect sizable donations to make a big impact in our community,” Konieczny says. “It makes me grateful and proud to be a part of a school with values that go beyond just ourselves.”

The Lucas College and Graduate School of Business at SJSU has been recognized as the No. 1 CSU business school and among the Top 100 undergraduate business schools nationwide in last week's Poets&Quants For Undergrads rankings!

"Being named the No.1 CSU business school and ranked among the Top 100 undergraduate business schools nationwide sends a strong message to prospective students and their families: you can get a world-class business education, with deep industry ties and strong career outcomes — all at a public university price point," says Dean Rangapriya (Priya) Kannan.

Interested in renewable energy? So are we! SJSU is delighted to announce our participation in the California Solar Canal Initiative, a research consortium of faculty from seven top California research universities aiming to tackle the problem of renewable energy by installing solar panels over water canals to reduce evaporation and generate clean energy.

SJSU’s contributions will be led by Dustin Mulvaney, professor of environmental studies.

“Our involvement in the project shows that our students and faculty are quickly becoming leaders in promoting the sustainability of energy and water systems to integrated sectors that are crucial to addressing climate change and human prosperity in California,” says Mulvaney, who initially wrote about solar canals as a “win-win” techno-ecological synergy in a paper in Nature Sustainability” in 2019.
