FAQ

Am I required to report?

For SJSU employees, Referring or Reporting concerns to the Behavioral Intervention Team is not just appropriate, but required for many high-level risky behaviors. Employees have levels of “duty to report” so that students can get connected to the right resources without delay.

Is this confidential?

Our program abides by the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); due to this, we are a private, but not a confidential resource. For faculty and staff, we are one of the need-to-know entities to report to on campus.

Will this student get in trouble?

Referring someone to BIT helps us better understand the issues someone is experiencing. That is the best way to provide or get them connected to support to assist them. BIT is not a punitive process. Students who work with our case managers and other team members are guided with education, safety, and wellness in mind.

Should I tell someone I referred them?

Yes, if referring other people, it can be helpful to let them know that you’re referring them so they can get support beyond what you’re capable of providing yourself. This makes our outreach efforts seem connected and anticipated.

Can I consult with someone before I submit a referral?

Yes. Consultation is available for non-emergency calls (408) 924-6339 and contingent on availability. Please note there may be times when the line is not answered due to other campus needs or concerns. If you are unable to connect with someone, please leave a voice message and also submit a Concerning Behavior Form. Please note, the BIT line is not an emergency line, nor in person classroom response. If you believe an individual is an active threat to themselves or others or in case or emergency please contact UPD immediately (408) 924-2222.

Is there after-hours help?

BIT does not provide emergency support.  Always call UPD at 408-924-2222 or 911 if you are concerned about someone taking immediate action to hurt themselves or others.

If you are in need of someone to talk to now, call:

• Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) Crisis Line: 408-924-5678.

• Santa Clara County Suicide and Crisis Service: 855-278-4204.

• If you'd like to text with someone, Text BAY to 741741.

What is post-hospitalization support?

When SJSU students find themselves in a situation where they’ve needed to be hospitalized, returning to campus might not be so easy.  Our procedure is to meet with all students in that situation to help them figure out what next steps might be, from discussing re-integration to the classroom, housing situation, group projects, to what ongoing mental or physical health support they might need. We can help coordinate items related to students interested in taking time off of school to focus on themselves.
