Makeup Requirements

Those who intend to apply for graduate study in civil and environmental engineering but do not hold a baccalaureate in civil engineering programs accredited by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), must complete select undergraduate coursework before beginning graduate study in the department.

Mathematics and Science

All students who do not possess a Civil Engineering degree are expected to complete engineering science and civil engineering courses. Prior to applying to the program, students are expected to complete the following mathematics and science coursework or their equivalents at another institution.

Mathematics

  • MATH 30 - Calculus I — OR — MATH 30P - Calculus I with Precalculus
  • MATH 31 - Calculus II
  • MATH 32 - Calculus III
  • MATH 33A - Ordinary Differential Equations for SCI & ENGR (Previously known as Math 133A)
  • MATH 39A - Linear Algebra I (Previously known as MATH 129A. Course not required, but recommended for structural students.)

Physics

  • PHYS 50 - General Physics/Mechanics
  • PHYS 51 - General Physics/Electricity and Magnetism

Chemistry

  • CHEM 1A - General Chemistry
  • CHEM 1B - General Chemistry (Course not required, but recommended for environmental students.)

Engineering Science and Civil Engineering

The following table contains prerequisite lists for each of the special areas within civil engineering in which this department offers graduate programs. Students intending to earn an MS in Civil Engineering at SJSU must complete these either at SJSU or in some other ABET-accredited engineering program. It is best to complete them before applying for graduate standing, although they may be taken as a Conditionally Classified Graduate Student.

These requirements are to be considered minimal. Others might be necessary to satisfy prerequisites for courses you wish to take to complete your MS degree. Deletions are possible, but only in exceptional cases where applicants have clearly demonstrated knowledge and experience equivalent to course content here at SJSU.

Students who have pursued engineering programs at U.S. institutions in which none of the programs have been accredited by ABET will be required to take the prerequisites indicated. This will also be true for those whose bachelor's degrees are in ABET-accredited technology programs.
