Learning Outcomes

What do you learn in communication studies? The major covers four areas—Core, Foundations, Inquiry, and Practice—through which you'll work towards five program learning outcomes.

In the core, students will 1) examine the historical formation of the communication studies discipline and how it shapes communication as a central problematic in contemporary life, and 2) design their future as communication leaders in contemporary society. 

In foundations, students will 3) explain a set of assumptions and concepts that distinguish an area of communication study.

In Inquiry, students will 4) distinguish the types of questions, problems, or phenomena that a research approach addresses from those it does not. 

In Practice, students will 5) apply a set of communication-related concepts to a problem or phenomenon in a significant relational, sociopolitical, or cultural context.
