Developing and Scaling Internal Capacity
A Research to Practice Model
At the IEE at San Jose State Unversity's Lurie College of Education, we:
- Partner with K-14 schools and districts to provide customized professional learning that promotes equity and access
- Use a collaborative, emancipatory model with faculty experts who center historically marginalized learners
- Facilitate systems-level pedagogical and organizational transformation
Why use a research to practice model?
- Systems-level reform requires coherent and aligned efforts (Cohen & Mehta, 2017)
- Effective PD draws on internal assets, is context-specific, and research-based (Welton et al., 2018)
- Most diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings are one-off episodes conducted by outsiders, which ais to promote sutained inquiry into practice (Pollock & Matschiner, 2022)
- Excessive attention to equity mindsets prior to taking action can inhibit change efforts (Ishimaru & Galloway, 2021)
- "Strong equity... requires collaboration among diverse stakeholderrs to first recognize and then confront the reproduction of inequities through the everyday structural and systemic aspects of schools [and] school systems" (Eddy Spicer & Gomez, 2022, p. 90)
