About International Gateways, SJSU

Since 1975, International Gateways has provided an intensive academic curriculum alongside a nurturing and supportive environment enriched with field trips and activities to experience American culture firsthand. You will learn from experienced teachers and classmates hailing from diverse backgrounds across the globe. 

Through Semester at SJSU (SAS) program at IGateways, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in American culture and city life at San José State University. This program allows you to participate in SJSU classes while keeping your I-20 status intact. It also offers disqualified SJSU students a chance to enhance their grades and retain student status, all while receiving support to achieve their academic and career goals.

San José offers a mild climate with over 300 days of sunshine annually. The world famous cities of San Francisco and Berkeley, along with the stunning beaches of Santa Cruz and Carmel, are all within an hour of the SJSU campus.

Our Team

Kim Green | Associate Director / Instructor

Kim has worked at International Gateways for more than 24 years. She oversees faculty and student affairs and also teaches higher level courses at International Gateways. She has a Master's degree in TESOL from Seattle University and a Bachelor’s Degree in History from the University of California, San Diego. In her spare time, Kim likes to cook, eat, and travel to learn about new cultures.

Ben Soller | Academic Advisor / Instructor

Ben is the Academic Coordinator for International Gateways and has been teaching here since 2005. He has a B.A. in History from the University of Washington and an M.A. in TESL from Northern Arizona University. He enjoys listening to music, singing karaoke, riding his bike, and watching movies.

Marwa Abbas | Semester at SJSU (SAS) Manager

Marwa Abbas is the Semester at SJSU Manager at International Gateways. She recruits students overseas and helps with SAS Admission, course registration and selection. She has been working at International Gateways for 11 years and SJSU for 14 years. She received her M.A. in TESOL from San Jose State University. She has traveled to more than 10 different countries. She enjoys skiing with her family, and loves baking with her daughter, Jannah. She used to be on the National Team of Swimming in Egypt.

Rick Murno | Custom Programs Specialist

Rick has over 20 years of experience teaching languages at various levels to diverse audiences, and he has been with International Gateways since 2011. Previously he had 10 years' experience in high tech marketing at Silicon Valley companies. Rick has also trained both non-native and native English-speaking Silicon Valley personnel in professional business communication skills.  He has an MPA from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey and B.Sc. degrees in French and linguistics from Georgetown University. In his spare time, Rick enjoys studying languages, international film, reading, cycling, and a really good cup of coffee.

Julie Yang | Path to SJSU Degree Manager

Julie Yang advises International Gateways students about the undergraduate and graduate programs available at SJSU and assists them during their application processes. She has been working at International Gateways for almost 20 years. She has a BA in Education from China and a Ph.D. in International and Comparative Education from University of London in Britain. In her free time, she likes to travel internationally and watch K dramas.

Yi Kang | Admissions Support Coordinator

Yi joined the International Gateways Admissions team in February 2022. After graduating from Santa Clara University, she served in Jesuit Volunteer Corps and AmeriCorps, assisting first-generation students in Newark, NJ throughout their college application process. In her free time, Yi enjoys rock climbing, reading, hiking, and looking after her growing houseplant collection.
