About the TEAS

The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is used as part of the admissions process by nursing schools nationwide. Our test center accepts students who are applying to any nursing program, including SJSU.

You MUST first register for an account on the ATI website and obtain an ATI Paper/Pencil ID before you register for the test. Our center ONLY administers the paper-based version of the TEAS. Calculators are provided.

SJSU currently offers the TEAS 7.

The TEAS VII consists of 170 questions across 4 content areas: Reading (64 minutes), Mathematics (54 minutes), Science (63 minutes), and English (28 minutes), for a total of 3 hours and 29 minutes. Total test time is 4.5 hours.

Candidates will be assigned randomly to start at 8 am or 1:30 pm. You will receive your reporting time, room assignment, and instructions via e-mail about 3-5 days prior to the test. Please plan accordingly.

Who needs to take the TEAS?

• ALL SJSU nursing applicants, prior to applying

The TEAS is offered several times per year. Take the TEAS early to ensure your scores are posted ahead of any registration or application deadlines. Scores are released on the ATI website 7-10 business days after the test.

Register For The TEAS (No late registration. FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.)
You must register EXACTLY as your name appears on your photo ID.
(Ex: If your ID says Samuel Leonidas Spartan Jr, do NOT use Sammy Spartan.)

Special Circumstances

• I usually test with accommodations.

  • If you receive disability-related accommodations, register for the test first and then contact the SJSU Accessible Education Center (AEC) to arrange accommodations at least one month prior to your exam. Students must email the office two weeks prior to the test date to check on their accommodations. All accommodated students will be testing on Friday.

• I need to reschedule my TEAS.

  • E-mail us before the test registration deadline. Include your SJSU ID number and the transaction number on your TEAS receipt. After registration closes, we can reschedule your test date if it is due to an emergency of some sort and if you can provide documentation to support your request (legal, medical, etc). We reserve the right to approve/deny all requests. Tests may be rescheduled one time with the appropriate documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

• I am not a Nursing student. Do I need to take the TEAS?

  • No. Only nursing applicants need to take the TEAS.

• I am applying to other nursing programs, not SJSU. Can I still test at SJSU?

  • Yes. We administer the test for students applying to any nursing program.

• What is an ATI Paper/Pencil ID?

  • This is a unique registration number, assigned by ATI, for each candidate taking the paper/pencil version of the TEAS, used by you and by your nursing programs to access your test score(s). You will need that ID number on the day of the test, otherwise you will not be allowed to test. In such cases, fees are forfeited.

• I did not receive an admission ticket with my TEAS test time.

  • Admission tickets are sent out via email a few days before the test date.  If you do not receive a ticket by the day before your exam and you have checked your spam/junk folder, e-mail us before 5 pm.We will need your ATI number and your test registration receipt to look up your information.
