The Health and Aging Conference is an annual event held to showcase aging-related research conducted by faculty and students at SJSU as well as other higher education and research institutions in the San Francisco Bay area and beyond. In addition to receiving support from a variety of internal resources at SJSU, we have also partnered with major provider organization such as MidPen Housing, City of San Jose Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services, and the County of Santa Clara Department of Adult and Aging Services to provide opportunities for professionals and other interested individuals to participate in the conferences. The conference/poster session provides researchers and educators excellent opportunities to introduce their work to colleagues in the region with similar interests in aging.
In Fall 2010 CHAMP faculty piloted a model for interdisciplinary learning by developing a wellness fair for members of the Timpany Center. This was expanded to the larger community in Fall 2011 by partnering with the County of Santa Clara Department of Adult and Aging Services. The fairs are held annually in the Fall in a variety of locations. A few hundred graduate and undergraduate students from eight academic departments have participated in the fairs over the years to provide wellness education, screenings, and physical activity demonstrations to seniors. The fairs provide excellent opportunities for students to practice their communication skills and engage with seniors in the community, and learn about the resources available to address the myriad issues that affect healthy aging in diverse populations. Our experiences with the wellness fairs are documented in a 2015 peer reviewed publication titled “Health Promotion Practice and Interprofessional Education in Aging: Senior Wellness Fairs,” in the Journal of Gerontology and Geriatrics Education.
