National Pan-Hellenic Council
The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is the coordinating body for the historically African-American fraternities and sororities at San José State University. Nationally, NPHC is comprised of nine organizations (5 fraternities and 4 sororities), and is known as the "Divine Nine." NPHC promotes interaction through forums, meetings and other mediums for the exchange of information and engages in cooperative programming and initiatives through various activities and functions.

You’re invited to come and see the NPHC chapters showcase their organizations. NPHC is composed of historically African American/Black fraternities and sororities. NPHC Showcasee will offer students the opportunity to learn about the traditions of our NPHC chapters.

- Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The chapter here at SJSU, was founded on March 6, 1962. Currently, the chapter is continuing the legacy of Alpha and continues to stress academic excellence among its members, the brothers also recognized the need to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices faced by African-Americans.

- Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Alpha Kappa Alpha is the first Greek-lettered sorority established and incorporated by African-American college women. The sorority was founded on January 15, 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Forming a sorority broke barriers for African-American women in areas where little power or authority existed due to a lack of opportunities for minorities and women in the early 20th century. In 1950, at SJSU, the Delta Nu Chapter was established. The current chapter, Zeta Psi, was chartered on February 26th, 1972 by 14 women. The sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha work with communities through service initiatives and progressive programs relating to education, family, health, and business reaffirming their motto of, “By Culture and By Merit”.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. has a fundamental purpose of achievement with their motto being, “Achievement in Every Field of Human endeavor”. This international organization was founded in 1911 on the campus of Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana by 10 young men. The Delta Rho Chapter was founded in 1956 at SJSU, and was the first African-American organization on our campus.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization founded on the campus of a historically black college. Since its humble beginnings on the Howard University campus, the Omega Psi Phi fraternity continues to be on the front line, leveraging its power, influence and more than 100 years of commitment to the uplift of our people and our communities. Omega Psi Phi has more than 700 chapters with members engaged in various academic disciplines and professional endeavors. The fraternity motto is "Friendship is Essential to the Soul."

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded in 1913 at Howard University in Washington D.C. The organization is made up of college educated women committed to the constructive development of its members and to public service with a primary focus on the Black community. Delta Sigma Theta provides an extensive array of public service through its Five-Point Program Thrust of Physical and Mental Health, Educational Development, Economic Development, International Awareness and Involvement, and Political Awareness and Involvement. Eta Omega Chapter was chartered in December 1970 at San José State University by four women.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated was founded in Washington, D.C. on January 9, 1914, at Howard University. Later, in 1980, the Mu Lambda Chapter was founded at SJSU. The fraternity's founders wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would exemplify the ideals of Brotherhood, Scholarship and Service. Rather than gaining skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma hold a deep conviction of returning their newly acquired skills to the communities from which they come from. This deep conviction is mirrored in the Fraternity's motto, "Culture For Service and Service For Humanity."

Zeta Phi Beta was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations―to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. Founded January 16, 1920, Zeta Phi Beta began as an idea conceived by five young women at Howard University in Washington D.C. These five women, also known as the “Five Pearls”, dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood. Zeta Phi Beta rechartered the Psi Mu Chapter at SJSU in 2014. These sisters work to uphold the ideals that their founders created.

Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated is a historically African-American, collegiate fraternity whose purpose is the development and perpetuation of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, fidelity and brotherhood among men. The organization was founded in 1963 at the Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland and first started as a support system for men of color during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. The Delta Chi Chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. at SJSU was founded in 2001. These brothers strive to live by their national motto of, “Building A Tradition, Not Resting Upon One!”
