From our founding as California’s first public university to our current partnership with WSCUC, each milestone reflects our dedication to transformation, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Overall Timeline

1857: San José State is founded and becomes California’s first public institution of higher education.

1935: Renamed San José State College.

1949: Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), now the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).

1960: The California State Colleges are unified under the Donahoe Higher Education Act, forming the CSU system.

1974: Renamed San José State University.

1982: The system formally becomes the California State University (CSU).

2015: WSCUC Reaffirmation Visit: Accreditation reaffirmed for seven years.

2017: WSCUC Special Visit to review progress on prior recommendations.

2021: Submitted Institutional Report and completed WSCUC Offsite Review.

2022: WSCUC Reaffirmation Visit: Accreditation reaffirmed for six years.

2025: WSCUC Special Visit focused on specific follow-up areas.

2027: Submit Institutional Report for the next WSCUC reaffirmation review.
