James M. Freeman is the second person in his family to have taught at San José State. His father, Eugene Freeman, was a Professor in the Department of Philosophy.

Of his career at San José State, James Freeman writes, "I am grateful to my parents, my wife and my students, who suggested that what I teach have relevance to the world around them. They were the inspiration for my social advocacy books, from Untouchable: an Indian Life History, to Voices from the Camps: Vietnamese Children Seeking Asylum, and also my charitable assistance activities over several decades. I also owe a debt of gratitude to San José State University, which gave me the freedom, and the time (through sabbaticals) to apply my academic background to make the world a better place to live."
