Reckmeyer Global Fellow Award

This annual award honors graduate students whose work demonstrates scholarly excellence and global perspectives. It was established in 2020 by long-time faculty member Dr. William J. Reckmeyer and his wife, Joan P. Reckmeyer, to support graduate students in the SJSU Applied Anthropology graduate program, as well as eligible students in the SJSU Interdisciplinary Studies program.
The award, which is granted to one graduate student each year, includes an unrestricted honorarium of $1000. Awardees make a presentation on their work at the Anthropology Department’s annual AnthROX celebration, or another public event.
Eligibility
Students applying for the Reckmeyer Global Fellow Award must meet the following criteria:
- Current enrollment in either the Anthropology Department’s M.A. in Applied Anthropology program or in the College of Graduate Studies M.A.-M.S. Program in Interdisciplinary Studies;
- Completion of at least 15 units of SJSU graduate coursework;
- Demonstrated scholarly excellence with a significant global dimension in study and research;
- Nomination by a current member of the SJSU Anthropology Department’s graduate faculty.
Application Process
To apply for the Reckmeyer Global Fellow Award, please submit an application no later than October 1 with the following documents:

A brief nomination letter from a member of the SJSU Anthropology Department graduate faculty. This can be emailed directly from the professor to anthropology@sjsu.edu.
- A one-page personal statement (450-500 words), explaining your interest in the award,
your experience, and a summary of your qualifications
- A copy of your unofficial transcript from SJSU
Awards are announced in early November each year, and student presentations are scheduled in the spring.
