Program Information and History

The Associated Students Child Development Center began operation in the summer of 2000. It is an expansion of the program of the Frances Gulland Child Development Center which was founded in 1972 by a group of students in the SCIP program, led by graduate student Carl Foster, who saw the need for child care for student parents. The Frances Gulland Center operated in rented space in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. The new facility was  made possible by a referendum in which the students of San Jose State University voted to assess themselves a fee to construct and operate a new center. While the Frances Gulland Child Development Center provided services for two and a half to five-year-old children, the ASCDC cares for children from four months to five years of age. The program is designed to  meet the individual needs of each child while providing a developmentally appropriate curriculum for all ages.
