Panopto Frequently Asked Questions

- How do I move my Canvas Studio videos to Panopto?

- Go to sjsu.hosted.panopto.com and login.
- Create folders to stay organized. Note: Any video you put in your Canvas course folder will automatically be available to your students.
- Next, download your Studio video and captions.
- Go to Panopto and select the create button in the top left corner and upload your video.
Once you upload the video, Panopto will automatically generate captions. To adhere to accessibility standards, the captions must be corrected. - If you would like to upload your captions file from Studio, you will need to delete the auto-generated Panopto captions. Hover over your video and select the gear settings icon and select captions. Open the “English" drop down menu at the top and select delete captions.
- In the Upload Captions section, select the language and select the captions file you want to upload. Then select that the captions are "based on the edited session". Finally, select upload captions.

- What are some of the benefits of Panopto for students?

There are many useful features of Panopto!
- Students can search both the spoken words in the video and the text displayed visually on the screen.
- Students can choose how to view the video by customizing the viewer.
- Students can take notes on the video and choose to make them public or not.
- Students can create bookmarks to mark specific parts of the video.
- The table of contents gives students an overview of the content. Note: Instructors can edit and add to
the table of contents by linking a video or other resources.

- How do I get started using Panopto in my Canvas course?

From Canvas, select the Panopto tab. If you don't see it, go to Settings and enable Panopto.
A Canvas Panopto course folder is automatically created. It will be entitled: "Fall 2024 - FA24: YourCourseName".
If you create your Zoom meetings from within Canvas, your Zoom Cloud recordings will automatically appear in your Panopto course folder. All videos in the Panopto course folder are viewable by the students in your course.
Now you can Add Panopto Videos to Your Canvas Course! It is highly recommended to embed your Panopto videos in a Canvas page, announcement, assignment, discussion or quiz. That way the video will copy over if you copy your Canvas course the following semester.

- As an employee, can I create, edit and share videos outside of Canvas?

Yes, to use all the features of Panopto, including organizing your folders, go to https://sjsu.hosted.panopto.com/ and select single sign on to login.

- Can I create videos using the web browser or do I have to install Panopto?
-
No, you don’t have to install Panopto. You can use the web based version called Panopto Capture. To learn more: How to create a Video using Panopto Capture and Panopto Capture Settings.

How long does it take to upload a video to Panopto?

The uploading speed varies and depends on your internet uploading speeds.

How do I create and edit my captions?
-
Captions are automatically generated. It takes only a few minutes. To adhere to accessibility standards, you must edit them for accuracy.
Select the edit button in the top right of the video. Then, select captions in the left navigation menu.
Important: To save your edits, select “Apply” in the top right corner!

Does Panopto generate captions in multiple languages?
-
Yes, Panopto can generate captions in more than 20 languages.
By default, the captions will be automatically generated in English. To reprocess the captions in a different language, select the video's settings. Select captions and in the drop down menu select "change language". Select the language spoken. Then select "save and reprocess".
Note, Panopto will not recognize if there are multiple languages spoken in one video. Manual edits will need to be made.
Another option is to create a folder for videos that will only be spoken in a particular language. Then change the settings for the whole folder to that language. All future videos created or uploaded to that folder will have automatic captions generated in that language.
As always, remember to edit your captions for correctness.

How do I locate my Zoom Cloud Recordings?

If you created your Zoom meeting from within Canvas, your Zoom Cloud Recordings will appear in your Panopto Canvas Course Folder. It will be entitled "Fall 2024 - FA24: YourCourseName".
If you created your Zoom meetings from sjsu.zoom.us or the Zoom application, your Zoom Cloud Recordings will automatically appear in your "Meeting Recordings" folder in Panopto. Go to your "My Folder" to locate your "Meeting Recordings" folder.

How do I import my prior Zoom Cloud Recordings into Panopto?

- I see many short Zoom Cloud Recordings in Panopto. How can I fix this?
-
The short recordings are automatically generated when students join a Zoom session before the host.
To avoid these short recordings, disable the "join before host" Zoom setting. To do this for all Zoom sessions, go to sjsu.zoom.us and select Settings, then search for "join before host". Deselect "allow participants to join before host".
Note: The setting "record sessions automatically" will not trigger multiple short video recordings.

What is the best way to share Panopto videos with my class?

Sharing videos with your class is easy. Please see Panopto Video Sharing Best Practices.
Please remember to adhere to FERPA guidelines, any videos with student content must not be shared outside of that class, so do not "Share with Organization" as videos will be shared too widely.

Can students record and submit videos using Panopto?

Yes, but students have to access Panopto through a Canvas assignment. The instructor must first create an assignment folder and then create a Canvas assignment with the "text box entry" online submission type. For instructions see: How to Create a Video Assignment in Canvas.

Can students get notified when I add a new video to the Panopto Course Folder?

Yes, there are two steps.
First, the faculty must change the Course Folder settings.
Open the course folder and select the gear icon in the top right corner of the screen.
Select “Notify viewers via email and Microsoft Teams (if connected) when new videos are ready."
Second, students must change their notification settings.
Go to sjsu.hosted.panopto.com and login using their SJSU credentials.
Select the avatar in the top right corner and select user settings.
Finally, select "Notify me via email and Microsoft teams (if connected) when videos finish processing."

Can I give feedback directly on students’ video submissions?
-
Yes, you can give feedback directly on the video!
In the speedgrader, select the arrow at the bottom of the video and then select the comment button in the top left corner.
Play the video and enter your comments at specific points throughout the video.
These comments are set to “public” but by default, only the instructor and student can view them.

Can I create video quizzes with Panopto?

Yes, there is a quiz feature in Panopto.
- Create your video quiz in Panopto, then create a Canvas assignment.
- For the submission type, select the external tool and select Panopto. This will send the quiz scores to your Canvas gradebook.
- Locate your video quiz.
