General Education Advisory Committee (GEAC)
Reports to the Curriculum and Research Committee
The General Education Advisory Committee receives and solicits courses and reviews curricular proposals designed to satisfy General Education (GE), American Institutions (AI) graduation requirement, and Graduation Writing Assessment Requirements (GWAR) from all colleges and departments of the University; provides support to departments seeking to develop GE, AI, or GWAR courses; recommends approval of new curricular proposals for purposes of GE, AI, and GWAR; reviews the GE portion of materials submitted in the program planning process; and, evaluates curricula according to the current GE Guidelines. The GEAC evaluates modifications requested by degree programs in accordance with the current Guidelines.
Fall 2022 GE Guidelines
Starting in Fall 2019, and over the next two and a half years, more than 500 members of the SJSU community (faculty, staff, students, and administrators) participated in forums, workshops, and committee meetings to create guidelines that represent SJSU’s mission and goals and also comply with Title 5 and CSU requirements. The revised guidelines include a new set of GE Goals; updated Program Learning Outcomes, Area Learning Outcomes, and content requirements; mapping of GE ALOs to GE PLOs for assessment; and additional clarity on diversity goals and content. The revised GE Guidelines were passed by the Academic Senate in May 2022.
General Education Program Review 2024
SJSU's GE Program was first reviewed in 2017 using the standard program planning process followed by academic programs on our campus. Click on the links below to see the program review and the Action Plan, which have guided our work for the last seven years. Our second program planning review is scheduled for fall 2024. The GE Program self study will be posted here by October, along with the schedule of meetings with our external reviewer.
General Education Assessment Task Force (2019)
In Fall 2018, a task force was appointed to follow up on the recommendations of the external GE review and the 2017 GE self-study, which included a student survey. The task force suggested SJSU create meaningful GE program-level outcomes and assess GE as an integral program as opposed to assessing individual courses.
