About Us
San José State University, founded in 1857, is the oldest public institution of higher education on the West Coast. We have been preparing professional performers, composers, and music educators longer than any other school in California. Here you will find one of the most comprehensive programs in the state, served by a select group of extremely talented and dedicated teacher-artists. Our innovative and comprehensive curriculum truly prepares students for success as twenty-first century musicians!
San José State's applied studio faculty include a number of America's most gifted artists, ranging from Metropolitan Opera stars to leading musicians in major Bay Area symphonies. Our Grammy winning Jazz Studies faculty host many of Northern California's leading jazz musicians, and our award-winning Composition program is led by several of today's most respected composers.
SJSU's many highly regarded performing ensembles are directed by some of California's preeminent conductors. Our ensembles regularly perform at conferences and tour regionally, nationally, and internationally.
