Frosh Checklist

• Identify your assigned CoSS SSC advising team
• Identify your department major advisor
• Complete your Area 1A (English) requirement
• Complete your Area 2 (Math) requirement
• Earn 30 units by the end of Spring 2026
• Make an appointment once per semester with your assigned CoSS SSC Advisor

• What will registration look like for Fall 2025?

  • You can view your Fall 2025 enrollment date on your MySJSU. If you are a continuing student, when your enrollment appointment starts, you will register for classes on your own.

    Note: Remember to schedule an appointment with your CoSS SSC advisor before your enrollment time (we highly encourage you to book in advance) to review what classes you need to take in the following semester.

• How do I change my major?

  • Step 1: Visit the general catalog to learn more about your intended major.

    Step 2: Meet with an academic advisor at the Success Center of your intended major to discuss impaction and review what it takes to change your major.

    Step 3: Complete the necessary criteria needed to change/add your major as discussed with an advisor.

• How do I add a minor?

  • Step 1: Visit the general catalog to learn more about your intended major.

    Step 2: Meet with an assigned CoSS SSC Advisor to identify how the units will affect your degree progress. 

    Step 3: Meet with an advisor within the department that offers the minor to discuss the requirements and any additional steps you need to take to formally declare.

• How do I know my class standing?

  • Freshmen - 1-29 earned units 

    Sophomore - 30-59 earned units 

    Junior - 60-89 earned units 

    Senior - 90+ earned units 

     

• What does “full-time” mean?

  • An undergraduate student who enrolls in 12 or more units is classified as full-time for the purposes of financial aid.

    An average unit load of at least 30 units per academic year (15 units per semester without summer or winter coursework) is required to complete an undergraduate degree in four years.

• How do I know what classes to take next semester?

  • We encourage you to make an appointment with your CoSS SSC advisor before your enrollment time (we highly encourage you to book in advance) to review what classes you need to take in the Spring. 

• What are the Area 1A and Area 2 requirements for my first year? 

  • The Area 1A and Area 2 requirements must be completed within the first year at SJSU.

    
    Area 1A Requirement: 

    For students enrolled in ENGL 1AF, you will enroll in ENGL 1AS for the following semester.

    For students who have not enrolled in an A2 class this semester, be sure to enroll in ENGL 1A and have your RCW completed.

    
    Area 2 Requirement:

    Your Area 2 course is determined by your major (or intended major) and your math category. 

    If you are math category III or IV, you will most likely need to also register for your math support class.
