Meeting an Academic Advisor

Advisors are available to assist you with GE Planning/Scheduling, University Academic Notice, University Policies & Procedures, Disqualification/Reinstatement.

An Academic Advisor is what you need as a College of Social Sciences Major if you have questions regarding requirements outside your major/minor, such as GE's, PE, American Institutions, transferring classes, unit counts.

  • Our Advisors are here to help you throughout your academic journey. Remember these things in preparing for your advising appointment:

    Connect with your Advisor Early On

    Reach out to your Advisor soon after you begin at SJSU. You will be working closely with your Advisor, so we encourage you to put in the effort to build a strong working relationship. Make sure you walk away with a clear understanding of when and how often to meet, and the topics you will discuss.

    Have Your Advising Documents Available

    -Transcripts (if you took classes from community college or another 4-year institution).
    -AP/IP/CLEP/IB Scores- Prior documentation, and who you contacted previously (if necessary).
    -Additional documents you think might be important or relevant

    Research Policies and Procedures

    Research the SJSU catalog so you have a good understanding of our policies and procedures. If you still have questions, come to your advising appointment prepared with a list of questions. If you need assistance with campus resources, our Advisors can refer you to the appropriate departments.

Department Major Advisors

A Department Major Advisor is available if you have questions related specifically to your major, such courses within your major, internships, or other related questions regarding specific major programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

• How are appointments done?

  • Appointments are done in-person and virtually via Zoom. 

• Can I choose which Advisor I meet with?

  • Yes, you can choose which Advisor you prefer when going through the EAB steps on scheduling an appointment. Please note any advisor at CoSS SSC can assist you with any questions regarding general university requirements.

    If you are on Academic Notice and a part of the Spartans Back on Track Program please contact your assigned Advisor first.

• I can't make it to my appointment! What do I do?

  • Contact your Advisor directly. You can find your Advisor's name on the confirmation email you received when your appointment was made. If you're unable to find it, please call our office at (408) 924-5363.

• What information should I have ready?

  • Make sure to have access to a copy of any and all advising documents that might be relevant to the reason of your appointment. Digital copies are fine, as long as they're current. Your advisor has access to your transcript and transfer credit that you see on MySJSU, so if you don't see something you think you should be seeing, bring that up to your advisor.

• I might be a few minutes late. How much time do I have until my appointment is cancelled due to being late?

  • You'll be given until 10 minutes after the start of your appointment to arrive to our office (for in-person appointments) or log in to your Zoom (for virtual appointments.) If you have not arrived starting the 11th minute, you'll be marked as a no-show and will need to reschedule.

• I'm having problems scheduling an appointment. What do I do?

  • Call our office at (408) 924-5363, or email socsci-success@sjsu.edu with a screenshot of the issue and briefly describe what you did to receive the error.

• What if I don't have access to EAB or receive an error message?

  • You will not have access to EAB if you identify as one of one of the following:

    1. An incoming Frosh or transfer student who has recently submitted your intent to enroll 

    2. A Former Student Returning (FSR) or Disqualified student looking to start the reinstatement process.

    If you identify as such, please email us your advising request at socsci-success@sjsu.edu. A staff member will respond to you with additional information.
