Program Admission Requirements

  • Conferred bachelor's degree in biological sciences or a related field of study
  • 18 semester units or equivalent quarter units of biology courses
  • 16 semester or equivalent quarter units of chemistry, which must include Quantitative analysis or analytical chemistry  AND Clinical chemistry or biochemistry 
  • 3 semester or equivalent quarter credit hours of physics, math, or statistics.
  • A grade of B or better in Hematology, Immunology and Medical Microbiology must be completed within 5 years of application to the program 
  • Overall GPA of 2.8 or higher from university granting Bachelor or Masters degree (Coursework taken to remediate a GPA that is below the 2.8 acceptable minimum must be taken at a regionally accredited university at the undergraduate, graduate or post baccalaureate level. Continuing education or extension courses will not be accepted to remediate a low GPA) 
  • Valid CLS Trainee License issued by the State of California Department of Public Health
  • Acceptance by the SJSU CLS Training Program Selection Committee and a Clinical Affiliate
  • Legal right to work in the United States
  • Meet all the requirements of San José State University Admissions Department
  • Be able to pass basic health screen, drug test, background check
  • Proof of current immunity to Hep B and other infectious diseases as required by our clinical affiliates
  • Applicants must review the program’s Technical Standards and Essential Functions prior to applying. These standards define the essential non-academic abilities required for safe participation in clinical training. 

Additional Important Information

  • All prerequisites must be completed with grades documented by the application deadline
  • Our SJSU CLS Training Program Admission Requirements complement the requirements of California Laboratory Field Services (LFS) for a CLS Trainee License
  • Students should be aware of this academic probation and disqualification policy
  • Genetics and Human (or Mammal) Physiology coursework is strongly recommended, but not required

Additional Requirements for Applicants with Degrees from Foreign Countries 

For applicants with prerequisites or a degree from a foreign country, a course-by-course transcript evaluation is required from one of the following agencies:

Note: Foreign students must also complete a minimum of 12-semester units of upper-division prerequisite coursework in the United States. If accepted into the program, your bachelor's degree, TOEFL score, and official foreign transcripts must also be deemed acceptable by San José State University Admissions Department.
