Calculus, Discrete Math, and Business Math

Science, Engineering, Math and BS Economics students take calculus classes from the Math 30-31-32 track, Business and Packaging students take Math 70, while Technology, Aviation, Packaging and BA Economics students take Math 71. Computer Science, Mathematics, Computer Engineering and Software Engineering majors take Math 42, Discrete Mathematics. Eligibility to register for these courses can be obtained through coursework or evaluation of prerequisite knowledge.  

The Precalculus Proficiency Assessment (PPA) can be used to satisfy the prerequisites for the first semester of Calculus and Discrete Mathematics, i.e. Math 30, Math 70, Math 71, and Math 42.   More information can be found on the Precalculus Proficiency Assessment (PPA) page.

Math 30: Calculus I

To register, satisfy 1,2 or 3 listed below. (Passing a High School Calculus course is not sufficient.)

Note:  Students repeating Math 30 must also take the corresponding workshop: Math 30 AND Math 30W.

  1. A grade of B or higher in Math 19, Precalculus or an approved equivalent college course found online at SJSU Articulation. If you take Math 19 at SJSU, you will be able to register for Math 30 as soon as your Math 19 grade is posted.
  2. A grade of B or better in both Math 18A and 18B or approved equivalent college courses found online at SJSU Articulation. If you take Math 18A and Math 18B at SJSU, you will be able to register for Math 30 as soon as your Math 18A and 18B grades are posted.
  3. Satisfactory score on the PPA. 

Math 30 with Math 30W: Calculus I with Workshop

To register, satisfy 1, 2 or 3 listed below. (Passing a High School Calculus course is not sufficient.) Math 30W is a required corequisite for students who meet the prerequisite through the following options. You cannot opt out of the workshop.  

  1. A grade of C- or higher in Math 19. Precalculus or an approved equivalent college course found online at SJSU Articulation. If you take Math 19 at SJSU, you will be able to register for Math 30 and Math 30W as soon as your Math 19 grade is posted.
  2. A grade of C- or better in both Math 18A and 18B or approved equivalent college courses found online at SJSU Articulation. If you take Math 18A and Math 18B at SJSU, you will be able to register for Math 30 and Math 30W as soon as your Math 18A and 18B grades are posted.
  3. Satisfactory score on the PPA.

Math 31: Calculus II

To register, satisfy 1 or 2 listed below. (Passing a High School Calculus course is not sufficient.)

Note:  Students repeating Math 31 must also take the corresponding workshop: Math 31 AND Math 31W.

  1. A grade of B or higher in Math 30 or Math 30 & 30W or an approved equivalent college course found online at SJSU Articulation
  2. A score of 4 or higher on the AP Calculus AB exam. NOTE: A passing grade in a HS Calculus course is not sufficient.

Math 31 with Math 31W: Calculus II with Workshop

To register, satisfy 1 or 2 listed below. (Passing a High School Calculus course is not sufficient.) Math 31W is a required corequisite for students who meet the prerequisite through the following options. You cannot opt out of the workshop.  

  1. A grade of C- or higher in Math 30 or Math 30 & 30W, or an approved equivalent college course found online at SJSU Articulation
  2. A score of 3 or higher on the AP Calculus AB exam. NOTE: A passing grade in a HS Calculus course is not sufficient.

Math 32: Calculus III

To register, satisfy 1 or 2 listed below. (Passing a High School Calculus course is not sufficient.)

Note:  Students repeating Math 32 must also take the corresponding workshop: Math 32 AND Math 32W.

  1. A grade of B or higher in Math 31 or Math 31 & 31W or an approved equivalent college course found online at SJSU Articulation.  
  2. A score of 4 or higher on the AP Calculus BC exam.

Math 32 with Math 32W: Calculus III with Workshop

To register, satisfy 1 or 2 listed below. (Passing a High School Calculus course is not sufficient.) Math 32W is a required corequisite for students who meet the prerequisite through the following options. You cannot opt out of the workshop.  

  1. A grade of C- or higher in Math 31 or Math 31 & 31W or an approved equivalent college course found online at SJSU Articulation
  2. A score of 3 or higher on the AP Calculus BC exam.

Math 42: Discrete Math

To register, satisfy eligibility requirements for Math 30 (see above).

Note:  Students repeating Math 42 must also take the corresponding workshop: Math 42 AND Math 42W.

Math 42 with Math 42W: Discrete Math with Workshop

To register, satisfy eligibility requirements for Math 30 with Math 30W (see above). Math 42W is a required corequisite for students who meet the prerequisite through the options listed in the see above link. You cannot opt out of the workshop.  

Math 70 Business Math

To register, satisfy 1, 2, or 3 listed below. (Passing a High School Calculus course is not sufficient.)

Note:  Students repeating Math 70 must also take the corresponding workshop: Math 70 AND Math 70W.

  1. A grade of B or higher in Math 18A. College Algebra (or Math 19: Precalculus) or an approved equivalent college course found online at SJSU Articulation. If you take Math 18A  at SJSU, you will be able to register for Math 70 as soon as your Math 18A: College Algebra (or Math 19 Precalculus) grade is posted.
  2. Satisfactory score on the PPA.
  3. A score of 570 (or higher) on the SAT, or a score of 23 (or higher) of on the ACT.

Math 70 with Math 70W: Business Math with Workshop

To register, satisfy 1, 2, or 3 listed below. (Passing a High School Calculus course is not sufficient.) Math 70W is a required corequisite for students who meet the prerequisite through the following options. You cannot opt out of the workshop.

  1. A grade of C- or higher in Math 18A, College Algebra (or Math 19, Precalculus) or an approved equivalent college course found online at SJSU Articulation. If you take Math 18A or Math 19 at SJSU, you will be able to register for Math 70 and Math 70W as soon as your Math 18A or Math 19 grade is posted.
  2. Satisfactory score on the PPA.
  3. A score of 570 (or higher) on the SAT, or a score of 23 (or higher) of on the ACT.

Math 71 Calculus for Business & Aviation

To register, satisfy 1, 2, or 3 listed below. (Passing a High School Calculus course is not sufficient.)

Note:  Students repeating Math 71 must also take the corresponding workshop: Math 71 AND Math 71W.

  1. A grade of B or higher in Math 18A. College Algebra (or Math 19: Precalculus) or an approved equivalent college course found online at SJSU Articulation. If you take Math 18A  at SJSU, you will be able to register for Math 71 as soon as your Math 18A: College Algebra (or Math 19 Precalculus) grade is posted.
  2. Satisfactory score on the PPA.
  3. A score of 570 (or higher) on the SAT, or a score of 23 (or higher) of on the ACT.

Math 71 with Math 71W: Calculus for Business & Aviation with Workshop
