Ulises Espinoza received his PhD from UCLA and his specialization lies at the intersection of cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, medical anthropology, and science and technology studies (STS). His research examines how values, politics and knowledge production intersect within medical systems, intellectual property regimes and biopiracy affecting Indigenous communities. Employing ethnographic methods, oral histories and experimental surveys, he explores race-based medical interventions in the U.S context and property rights among Achuar and Shuar communities in Ecuador. He has published in Nature Communications and Social Science & Medicine and held a postdoctoral position at Princeton University. He is currently completing his first book manuscript that explores narratives of grief and rupture tied to ideas of progress amidst Chicham speaking communities in Southeastern Ecuador.
