Abel R. Gomez earned a PhD in religion and a certificate of advanced studies in women’s and gender studies from Syracuse University. His research and teaching examine the relationships between land, ceremony, gender and sexuality, and (de)colonization, especially among contemporary Ohlone peoples. Gomez has collaborated with local tribes and organizations, including the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band and Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits. He was previously assistant professor of religion at Texas Christian University and Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Native American Studies at the University of Oklahoma. Gomez is a first-generation queer Latinx scholar born and raised in the Bay Area.
