RESAW (The European Research Infrastructure for the Study of Archived Web Materials) unites leading national web archives, research institutions, and the Internet Archive to advance cross-border web history and archival research.

AI and Emerging Technologies: Friend and Foe

February 4, 2025 - Dr. Anthony Chow presented an engaging event at the Mountain View Public Library. Attendees discovered how artificial intelligence (AI) evolved over the past year and explored cutting-edge demonstrations of how the SJSU iSchool is leveraging AI and emerging technologies. The interactive session included a live demonstration of innovative tools and a thought-provoking community conversation about the role of AI in learning, libraries, and the future.

    Hirsh presented at the AMICAL Consortium to a group of library leaders. Gleaning of the key forecasts of the future from Library 2035: Imagining the Next Generation of libraries, Hirsh explored what leadership may look like in the library's future, incuding key competencies that will be essential for leading that future.

Ethical Considerations in AI Research: An Examination of Elements in Current Research Projects

December 2, 2024 - Dr. Guannan Liu from the Department of Applied Data Science presented about the ethical considerations in AI research. The presentation explored these ethical considerations by examining three AI-driven research projects currently in progress, in human posture recognition, indoor localization, and human-machine interfaces. Critical ethical dimensions to be explored include data privacy, fairness, and algorithmic transparency. Key challenges include addressing the ethical implications of data collection and processing, mitigating bias in decision-making, and ensuring transparency to build trust in AI systems. This discussion emphasizes the importance of aligning technological innovation with ethical accountability to foster responsible research practices. By framing these considerations within the context of real-world applications, this presentation highlights the need to balance the pursuit of innovation with the imperative to uphold societal values, contributing to the broader discussion on ethics in AI.

November 9, 2024 - College of IDS faculty, Dr. Vishnu S. Pendyala spoke at the US-Taiwan High Tech Forum 2024 organized at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA. The event was attended by over 200 delegates.

Simon Shim Presents at the AI Summit

October 27, 2024 - Simon Shim, Professor and Chair of the Department of Applied Data Science, presented a session on Building and Evaluation of AI Assistants with RAG and Finetuning at the AI Summit and participated in a panel discussion on AI in Education at the AI Summit

  • Building and Evaluation of AI Assistants with RAG and Finetuning 
    Drawing from key insights from his research, Shim shared experiences from building and evaluating AI assistants. He discussed findings from various approaches and evaluation results of their impact on the relevance, similarity and accuracy of AI responses.
  • Panel Presentation on AI in Education
    Shim participated on a panel with Peter Norvig with HAI and Sadid Hasan with Microsoft on AI in Education. The session was moderated by Walter Greenleaf, PhD. from Stanford.
