Guidance for International Employees

Dear Colleagues,

We are deeply grateful for the many ways our international faculty and staff colleagues enrich our campus community and contribute to student success. Following President Teniente-Matson’s message regarding federal visa actions and support for affected students, many in our campus community have asked about the implications for international faculty and staff members.

Typically, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) communicates change of visa status to both University Personnel and the employee. Outside of USCIS protocols—which may change—we advise international employees to be cognizant of guidance from the California State University system’s International Travel Considerations, which strongly encourage all faculty, staff and students to carefully assess the necessity of international travel. As the advisory explains, “While the decision to travel outside the United States is personal, the CSU advises all members of its community to proceed with extreme caution. Immigration policies and practices, travel bans, and health and safety risks are shifting daily and often cannot be fully assessed or projected in advance.”

Additional guidance, information, and resources are available at the following links:

We encourage international employees to ensure they have copies of all appropriate documentation with them at all times. Employees who have any type of work visa, including H-1Bs, should contact Christie Martinez, Employment Authorization and Compliance Services Manager, to confirm that they have all required documentation.

These are challenging times, yet, as President Teniente-Matson affirmed, we remain committed to upholding the dignity and privacy of our community while acting in accordance with the law and our institutional values. Our campus is stronger because of the amazing international faculty and staff who enliven our community.

Sincerely,

Vincent J. Del Casino, Jr., Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Jeanne Durr, Interim Senior Associate Vice President, University Personnel
