Accessibility Tools

Accessible education aims to include and support all students, with specific attention to the needs of students who have differing abilities. Considering accessibility and accessible education from the start improves teaching quality and the learning experience for all students, reducing accommodation needs.

Below are some of the main tools to assist faculty and staff in creating and remediating Canvas content and documents. Please see Accessibility Tools at SJSU for an extensive list.

Note: SJSU is no longer using Ally. Please use UDOIT to view accessibility issues in your Canvas course and remediate them.

GrackleDocs: Use this Google extension to make your Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Sheets accessible. When launched, it scans the current document for accessibility issues.

NameCoach: Record the pronunciation of your name and add your pronouns. Encourage your students to do the same! This helps build a classroom community and sense of belonging.

PDF accessibility: This is a very common accessibility issue across all CSU campuses and can be avoided by following a few easy best practices.

TidyUp: Before scanning your course with UDOIT, save yourself some time and use TidyUp to remove unused and duplicate files!

UDOIT (Universal Design Online content Inspection Tool): Select UDOIT in the left navigation menu in Canvas. It provides instructors with guidance on enhancing the accessibility and inclusivity their course materials.
